Back to Hogwarts! Some ways to celebrate with Harry Potter himself

By Amy Moggio August 31, 2024

Tomorrow is known for many as “Back to Hogwarts” as many witches and

wizards head back to Hogwarts for their term at school. At 11am the train to

 Hogwarts leaves Kings Cross Station.

Here are some fun Back to Hogwarts activities you can do to celebrate the day!

  1. Movie Marathon! Start with Philosophers/Sorcerers Stone. Every witch or wizard needs snacks to accompany the movie and there are plenty to choose from.

  2. Make themed snacks! Bertie Botts every flavor beans aren’t the only snacks you can have. Start with a traditional English breakfast and have bacon, sausage, eggs, baked beans, tomato, bread and jam and of course, tea. Moving on to more delicious snacks. Brooms (pretzels with cheese), dragon eggs (deviled eggs), Hufflepuffs (cheesepuffs), Ravenclaws (bugles), have some salty Slytherins (chips), or Gryffindor grapes. Maybe you’d prefer Professor Sprouts Vegetable Garden? Or Cauldron Cakes? Monster book of Monster brownies? We’ll keep it simple and make butterbeer cookies or ice cream then. I followed this recipe: https://princesspinkygirl.com/butterbeer-ice-cream/ and it came out amazing!

  1. 3. Beverages are also a great addition. You can make many themed beverages other than butterbeer, especially if you’re not a soda household (cream soda and butterscotch ice cream topping, add vanilla whipped cream). If you’re a sprite/lemon-lime soda household, combine blue hawaiian punch with lemon lime soda for a patronus if you can get some dry ice from your local grocer (usually in a cooler near the ice).
To make Polyjuice Potion, combine lime sorbet (vanilla and green gel coloring if you can’t find any) with green hawaiian punch and sprite. It will create that fizzy look you’re going for.
To make gilly water, add cucumbers, a teaspoon of ginger, 1 cut up lime and some mint leaves to taste in a pitcher of water. For pumpkin juice: this recipe from saavymamalifestyle is one of the better ones I have found.

    1. Practice your spells! There are a lot of Harry Potter spells that you go back and forth quizzing each other, unscrambling letters, spelling them or more.

    2. Harry Potter madlibs. Many free printables are on various sites with madlibs to make the day fun.

    3. Pretend you’re in various Harry Potter classes:
Take potions class - combine soap, baking soda and vinegar. Add various extras for more fun.
Astronomy: Learn all the characters in the books that have stars/constellations and what they mean. What moon are we in right now?
Divination: Read some tea leaves. Look into the future. How would you like this class?
Care of magical creatures: Draw, make, paint, build (lego for ex) an animal. Maybe a magical creature. How would you care for this animal?
Defense against the dark arts: Grab some Pool noodles and duel each other. Make wands with parental supervision and pretend to cast spells at each other. How would you react?
Arithmacy: Do some math you find fun. What is the magic number in Harry Potter?
Ancient Runes: Look up some Runes and what they mean.
Charms: Can you turn water into rum? Float a feather? Practice pronouncing Wingardium LeviOsa.
History of Magic: Watch and read more Harry Potter!

    Enjoy Back to Hogwarts!
