Winter Conversation Starters

By Michelle Melnik; Macaroni Kid Amherst/Northampton December 1, 2019

Have you ever been in a conversation that resulted in an uncomfortable silence?  Or maybe, you met someone new, and were looking for a fun way to stir up the conversation?  Or maybe, you really don't know that friend or family member as well as you thought?  What are their interests? Do they prefer hot cocoa or hot tea?  Would they choose a sled made of sticks, or a sled made of hay?

Our Winter themed conversation starters might be just what you're looking for.  This printable includes 60 cards with Winter, Christmas, Hannukah, New Year's, and even a few Valentine's Day "Would you choose" questions.  We've also included 1 page with blank cards, so you can create your own questions.  There aren't a lot of rules in using the cards, but here are some ways to help you get the conversation started:

- Keep the cards in a jar and take out at your holiday gatherings.  Randomly choose cards to talk about with your guests.  Ask additional questions to encourage everyone to expand on their answers.

- Have someone randomly choose a card, then have them ask one person the question.  Rather than having them choose someone to ask, setup rules in advance, such as:  Round 1:  Ask the person sitting to the right of you.  Round 2:  Ask the person sitting to the left of you.  Round 3:  Ask the person sitting across from you, etc.  This is especially helpful with young people, as they will often ask the question to the person that they already know.  Games like this are so much fun when we move out of our comfort zone, and get to know someone new.

- Use cards as writing prompts (choose a card randomly and ask students to choose an answer from the card to write a paper about).  Later, they can get in groups, read their paper to the group, and discuss.

- Remind folks that there are no wrong answers.  Everyone can have different opinions, which along with good old-fashioned conversation, is often the best part.
